If you are a practising professional in any area of law enforcement
or security operations and wish to gain formal qualifications
in your area of expertise in order to enhance your career
opportunities, a graduate certificate or diploma may be the
ideal way to align your experience with a formal professional
qualification.
The Australian Institute of Public Safety is a specialist
independent provider of higher education courses and is widely
recognised as a leader in the provision of quality and relevant
professional development.
The Australian Institute of Public Safety offers Graduate
Certificates and Diplomas which are accredited by the Department
of Education and Training and are equivalent to those offered
by universities.
The Graduate programs are delivered by experienced academic
staff who are also practitioners in their field.
The Graduate Programs offered are:
- Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice (Law Enforcement)
- Graduate Diploma in Criminal Justice (Law Enforcement)
- Graduate Certificate in Security (Operations)
- Graduate Diploma in Security (Operations)
These courses will commence in the 2008 academic year.
Delivery and Study Load
Delivery is by distance learning combined with a weekend
intensive for each subject.
The academic year comprises 2 x 13 week semesters. It begins
in March and concludes in November. There is a four week
break between semesters and a one week mid-semester break
during each semester.
There is no mid-year intake.
The Graduate Programs are offered on either a full-time
or part-time basis.
A full-time load means undertaking four subjects per semester.
Each subject has 3 contact (in class) hours per week, so
full-time students spend 12 hours per week (or equivalent)
in class.
Articulation from Graduate Certificates to Graduate
Diplomas, and Exit Points.
If accepted into the courses, students who are eligible
for (ie: hold an undergraduate degree) and wish to undertake
the Diploma programs will enrol into this program. If Diploma
students wish to exit the program after successfully completing
sufficient subjects to fulfill the requirements of the Graduate
Certificate, they will be issued with the Certificate.
Those eligible for entry into the Diploma but who enrol
in the Certificate, will automatically be eigible to articulate
into the Diploma upon successful completion of the Certificate
(ie: pass all subjects).
Applicants who are accepted into the Certificate Programs
based on work/professional experience may articulate into
the Diploma provided they achieve a Distinction average
in all enrolled Certificate subjects - 75% or over.
Students who go on to undertake the Diploma courses are
not eligible to receive two qualifications ie: students
will receive either a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma
upon satisfactory completion of the course.
Qualifications
Graduates of our courses receive a recognised tertiary qualification
- a Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate equivalent
to those from the Universities.
The Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma in Security
(Operations) courses were accredited and authorised by the
Victorian Government Department of Education and Training
in 2004, pursuant to the Tertiary Education Act 1993 (Vic).
As indicated in the table of qualifications accredited
by the Australian Qualifications Framework, Graduate courses
fit into the Higher Education sector and are higher-level
qualifications than undergraduate degrees. Students entering
any graduate course must generally already have an undergraduate
degree, but entry into the Institute’s Graduate Certificate
is based on professional experience. Students who successfully
complete the course achieve a graduate qualification without
having to do an undergraduate degree first.
